GLOBALIZATION

Published May 10, 2012 by lzanusso

According to dictionary.com glabalization is the act of globalizing,  or extending to other or all parts of the world or worldwide integration and development. that upbeat explanation makes it seem that globalization’s outcome and effects are only beneficial to the world, but the negative affects override the positive. Yes, this process can benefit third world countries, connect our world through social media, create jobs, develop countries, and enhance trade but the incidents between these are far worse. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer all because of the economy these actions create. Third world countries and the workers hired to produce a mass product are degraded. They work for long hours in sweatshops and do not even get paid fairly but are forbidden to complain because they would get fired and not be able to provide for their families. Some countries and cultures could eb eroded or even eliminated due to the western countries infiltrating and expanding their customs and products. Globalization is the rat race for money and western domination by watering down cultures and compromising peoples self importance.

Blog #6: “A Call To Man”

Published April 3, 2012 by lzanusso

Tony Porter’s Ted Talk… called “A Call to Men”. :

1) What does he describe as “The Man Box?

A list of how a real man should act:

do not: cry openly or express emotions

(With the exception to anger)

express weakness or fear

demonstrate power control(especially over women)

Aggression dominance/ protector

Do not act like a women

hetersaexual

do not be like a gay man

yough/athletic/strength/courage

make decisions- does not need help

views woman as property/objects

2) How does the “man box” effect boys socialization?

It creates a false expectation of each boy and the male figure in their life is the only one who can alter that high, typical expectation. It forces males to act a certain way and build a wall that blocks out all emotions. This expectaion builds men up to be high and mighty when really they are the same emotionally as women and we are really all just humans.

3) How does this socialization in the “Man Box” effect relationships with women?

It makes it difficult for women to understand what they are feeling and how they are dealing with difficult times of their lives.. not letting people in make them seem unsociable and neglected and to a female this triggers all types of neglected emotions.

4) Choose one of the next two statements and explain it’s signifigance….

a) “Liberization of man is equal to the liberalization of women”

b) If saying to a boy on the football field that he is playing like a girl would “Crush Him”, what are we teaching boys about girls?

we are teching boys that girls are weak and the lesser of the 2 genders. which is incorrect… we all start out the same. why cant we continue to grow up the same way?

5) What are some ways we can change the way boys are socialized?

we can change this by changing the way our boys are raised. if we promote expression and discussion then when they are older crying or showing more emotion will not be frowned upon, it will be respected and welcomed.

#5 Highway of Tears

The Highway of Tears: a road of silent disappearances of aboriginal women that went unnoticed until a caucasion female was never found…

This highway was named the highway of tears because a pattern of abductions, and murders of aboriginal girls became evident. The topic of this ominous highway set between Prince George and Prince Rupert is very controversial because the disappearances of these women ages 12- 35 were never recognized or presented to the public to promote awareness until one Caucasian female was lost. these stories have yet to be recognized by mass media because of the stereotypes that go along with the aboriginal race. apparently they are alcoholics, drug addicts, insubordinate people with no ambition, so this creates the assumption that these disappearances and murders are related to drug crimes. these stereotypes that are not true have created a hidden tragedy that will forever go unseen. how can a girl like Monica Jack who was only 12 years old be related to issues pertaining to drugs? This girl who was not even in grade 9 proves that these disappearances are not due to drug criminals. All these poor females who’s bodies were not found, and their hopeful families who were not given closure will never be able to rest because our society has created these incriminating stereotypes. Our society, especially the ones who are seen and represented in the media, need to be the ones showing the world positive role models associated with the “less fortunate” “subordinate” people of our world in order to create and promote equality

#4: SILENCE is CONSENT

Published February 5, 2012 by lzanusso

Bobbie Harro wrote, ” if we just began to appreciate differences, and treat each other with respect then, everything would be alright,”. This statement seems to be the simple answer for the question of oppression, but it truly is one of the most difficult idea to get people to understand. How easy would it be to stop judging people and look beyond appearances? On paper, simple, but in the real world; almost impossible. “Silence is consent”, and Harro means that by watching discriminatory acts take place and not saying anything to stop it, you are agreeing with it therefore promoting it. I agree with Harro’s opinion completely. Our society is blinded by ignorance and the fear of losing our reputation, and because of that “different” social identities are harmed and abused as we all walk by. How many times as a child did you see someone get bullied? Did you do or say anything to help that child? if yes, then thank you for being so noble and chivalrous. If not, then you are the people who need to grow into modern-day superheroes. You need to take the time to open your eyes to the world of the society around you and recognize the people who are hurting and in need of support. Break the traditional “cycle of socialization” and enforce your helpful voice. As a child I was the one who would get bullied, and verbally attacked because I was “weird” . If someone stood up for me and stood by my side during those times my childhood would have been a lot more enjoyable and my opinion of the human race would be more positive. So, take the time out of your narcissistic lives to recognize that a few kind, powerful words can make all the difference in the world even for one person.

Human Rights Violations: Chad

Published February 5, 2012 by lzanusso

I’ve researched chad for this assignment and everything I read is quite disturbing, and hard to ever fully comprehend because of the free society we live in today. Child soldiers within Chad are being recruited as young as 10 years old. So when we were in grade four or five we could have been taken from our families who would have been killed, then physically, and verbally abused, and i gun shoved in our hands that was twice the size of us. How horrible would that be? it is unfathomable to us in Canada. Human rights violations include: safety from violence, freedom of speech, right to think freely, rights of a child are also violated: right to not be separated from your parents unless it is for your own good, right to privacy, protection from dangerous drugs, sexual abuse, kidnapping, and the right to have the government disallow you to join the army under 18, and receive special protection.  Many other human rights are violated every single day in this part of the world and other places as well. In order to make a dent in the process of eliminating child soldiers in Chad and other places in the world we have to stand up, and actually do something about it. Ignorance needs to be abolished, and we need to recognize that these are people, children, and families who are effected. Even though Chad is over 15 000 kilometers  it is still part of our home, and it needs our help in better developing its economy, government, and living conditions.

Bias and Media Literacy…

Bias: being in favour of or against something due to your opinions and influences

Media Literate: being able to understand, analyze,  evaluate and validate media.

After viewing and comparing these websites on MLK Jr. I realized how careful one has to be in order to form an opinion based on media.

1. Does anything immediately come to mind about the website names or domains?

www.martinlutherking.org is the site that gets me. Being and organization one would think that it was trustworthy, but the site shows a negative examination on MLK Jr. Wikipedia would be most trustworthy in my opinion because it covers the good the bad and the ugly truth about him.

2. Did you find any biases in the websites? Explain how you figured this out.

I found some in the “.org” site because it repeatedly states it’s the truth. But really it is the truth based on this organizations opinion.

3. If you were going to write a report on MLK jr. which website would you use? Why? What steps would you take in establishing what is fact and what is opinion?

I would use Wikipedia page because it has an exponential amount of information for a base. The facts and opinions would be determined by further examination of the statements by google, researching books, biographies and even just discussing it with people.

4. Explain why media literacy is so important during these current times.

With our world being so dependant on media and internet it is imperative that people become more media literate, especially younger generations. Many people just ‘Google” questions they have instead of asking a real person and they will assume it is all true. the truth is it might not be. You have to reasearch the people who wrote the articles or definitions and consider all the biases they may have toward the subject before you come to conclusions. Peoples opinions are filling our heads with false facts everywhere and being media literate will help us decipher between fact and opinion.

Creating Critical Consciousness

Published October 17, 2011 by lzanusso

What is critical consciousness?

When one focuses on developing a better understanding of our world, and their ability  to  recognize brutality in society and respond against it.

Developed or developing countries can all benefit from critical consciousness because it gives individuals an opinion and a voice to speak about the way their society functions. Without it people would get away with murder, literally. Violence and hate crimes occur everywhere; developing or developed countries it happens, unfortunately, and if people are not aware of what is going on around them then they will not be able to do anything to aid in reducing the violence. Even if people know what is going on they might just choose to ignore it. So it is important to create a voice for yourself and realize that you might be the only one that can stand up and promote change within reason. Critical consciousness is important to an extent,  because some people may take their reasoning too far and create groups or even leagues that might turn into something bigger and create more hate and violence within the society. Being aware of critical consciousness as and individual is most beneficial due to the fact that it will help diminish your judgments and selfish biases and change or improve your daily motivations. Critical Consciousness within each country, city, town, community and individual would overall create a better understanding of the world we live in today and recognize what needs to improve in order for complete union.
